Idyllic Generative Experimentation Hits the West Coast

A culmination of semi-modular design, West Coast synthesis, and the traditional Moog performance formula, Labyrinth is an icon of generative sequencing capable of producing vast tonal creations, from blooming synthesized atmospheres to unique percussive rhythms. It all starts with two onboard oscillators, shaped to perfection by voltage-controlled wavefolder controls. Passing through a parallel voice processing path, the Labyrinth's incredible morphing capability allows for entirely evolved sounds over time — a process made even more expansive by the unit's 32-point patchbay for seamless rig integration. The best part? Sweetwater synthesists have reported that the Labyrinth arrives with the entire gamut of required accessories, from a power supply to patch cables and even custom patch sheet overlays, ensuring you can get straight to the action within seconds.

Dual oscillator engines packed with West Coast prowess

A pair of onboard oscillators service a unique tonal foundation that's well beyond traditional Moog design. Taking shape in the form of West Coast-style synthesis, the Labyrinth's voltage-controlled wavefolder controls cater to a complete menu of potential sounds, from snappy metallic chimes to distorted percussive tones. Likewise, a pair of resonant voltage-controlled filters capable of both lowpass and bandpass responses make for excellent tonal shape experimentation with deep morphing possibilities. As a result, the Labyrinth is not only a great integration into your pre-existing rig — it's also an excellent studio or stage option all on its own.

Explore vast generative sequencing potential

Outfitted with two generative sequencer engines, the Labyrinth's dynamic possibilities spanning FM-style arpeggios, synthetic drum sequences, and randomized melodics are seemingly limitless. Trigger, run/stop, and tempo master controls ensure tight personalization over the sequencers' movement while onboard corrupt and CV range parameters service further generative possibilities. Another detail that's hard to miss is the Labyrinth's built-in 32-point patchbay, including connectivity to clocks, MIDI, and a swath of onboard parameters for seamless integration with additional instrument systems. Whether you're planning on cooking up experimental, ambient melodies or unique percussive accompaniment, adding the Labyrinth to your synth setup is a must.

Moog Labyrinth Features:

  • Deep parallel generative analog synthesis packed into a semi-modular Moog-style chassis
  • Dual oscillators with West Coast-style wavefolder control service expansive sound potential — conjure bright FM-style chimes, melodic sequences, synthetic drums, and everywhere in between
  • State variable voltage-controlled filters with lowpass/bandpass morphing facilitate complex shaping possibilities
  • Parallel voice processing path with voltage-controlled blending parameter for interesting generative sound creation
  • Onboard tempo, trigger, and run/stop sequencer controls

Reviews

Generative Inspiration
Labyrinth is the most recent offering to the Moog Mother Ecosystem of Eurorack compatible instruments. Moog refers to Labyrinth as a parallel generative analog synthesizer. This interesting architecture begins with a sine wave VCO modulated with a triangle wave. The output waveform is tailored by two parallel processing paths. One path is a wave folder. The other is a low-pass VCF. The paths may be either parallel or ordered (folder into filter or filter into folder). The generative attribute is a pair of 8-step (referred to as bits) sequencers that generate random melodies based on oscillator tuning. The note range and instances of randomization can be set, but the Labyrinth selects sequencer notes with a mind of its own. Control of oscillator pitch can be transposed via CV or MIDI. Of course, the patch bay provides further manipulation, experimentation, and integration with other Moog Mother Ecosystem and Eurorack instruments.
Labyrinth is not for those who desire strict control of the synthesizer beyond intentional sound design and patching. However, randomly generated sequences can be locked in if desired. Sequencer paths may also be chained for a single 16-step sequence.
Along with Spectravox, Labyrinth is Moog pushing the experimental envelope.
Getting Lost in the Labyrinth is a Good Thing!

The Labyrinth is amazing. Watching videos doesn't do it justice. You need to play with it. I run external clock and CV in, and the Labyrinth adds that amazing bit of randomness to my mix.

One word…. AMAZING
I have been playing, programming and have owned Synths since 1972. So I know my way around every type. I currently own quite a few Synthesizers, Drum Machines, Rhythm Synths. Samplers etc. in my Home Music Production Studio, more than 20. I had the urge to add something entirely different and looked into this Moog Labyrinth and I can say without a doubt it is incredibly different from anything I've ever used. I have only had it 2 days now and I am completely in awe of it. This machine is nothing like Moog has ever made. From the Oscillators to the Filters it's anything but a traditional Moog Synthesizer.
For me right now this is the Ultimate in Experimental music making. Obviously being only 2 days into it I have only begun to experience all that it's capable of.
This morning I hooked up my Keystep to the Midi In, sent it some sequencing data and it went wild, in a very good way.

A few caveats for anyone looking at this Synth, if you are looking for that Traditional Moog Sound from the VCO's and Moog Filter this is Not for you. Secondly be prepared for the Labyrinth to take control, there is only so much that you can initially control, then the rest is the Labyrinth. There is a slight steep learning curve, not really to difficult, just an adjustment to the terminology that it uses. Lastly, with the upper registers, tonally it is a bit thin so I recommend using it with an Effects Box or Pedal for some Reverb, Delay, etc. By the way that is not a deal breaker, the same holds true for almost every Analog Synthesizer.
So if you want to really try something new and have a world of experimenting get yourself this Labyrinth beast of a Synthesizer !

Best MOOG Synth yet!!!
The Labyrinth is by far my go to machine for my latest tracks. The randomness of percussion patterns and flexibility of manipulating the sounds emits an onslaught of raw sounds and noise, the perfect blends of beautiful chaos! Thanks to Chris at Sweetwater for being absolutely brilliant in recommendations for this machine as well as others in the past! Cheers!
Music background: Producer, Beat conductor
Decent on its own but really shines with other modular CV gear
Some really slick generative features to be had here, but the 2 decay-only envelope generators can be limiting. Read that bit again: you cannot adjust the attack time of either envelope. So, if you want adjustable attack parameters, you'll need to patch a SEQ CV and TRIGGER to another synth. Sure, this makes sense given the focus on percussive sounds, but it can't do much else without help from some modular friends: -1/2 star.

Also note the normalled design does not support duophonic play. To have each sequencer drive one of the two voices independently, you'll have to get pretty familiar with the patchbay. In general, this synth's true potential is unlocked via the patchbay. So, fair warning.

A great addition to your setup if you are handy with patch cables and have other modular gear!

Want real Moog sound? Take it from the die-hard analog synth masters here at Sweetwater: buy a Moog. It doesn't matter which one; their synths start at top quality and only go up from there. Sweetwater's relationship with Moog goes way back, and some of us fondly remember the last time Bob himself came to visit. Over the years, we've had the honor of watching Moog grow and evolve, and with synthesis experts like Daniel Fisher on staff, we're still one of the first companies to catch wind of new Moog products - they never fail to impress! Whether it's a classic reissue, a breakthrough new keyboard, or even a cool effects pedal, you can be sure anything you get from Moog will make you happy, and we'd love to tell you all about it.
