The floor tom was popularized in popular music by pioneer and “father of the modern drum kit,” Gene Krupa, in the 1930s when jazz ruled the airwaves. Clifton James picked up where Krupa left off with his heavy use of floor tom in the “jungle” rhythm of Bo Diddley’s ‘50s hit “Bo Diddley”.
