About the French Horn

The French horn has become a staple of school bands to elite orchestras across the globe. Renowned for its elegant, conical shape and winding tubing, this brass instrument produces a mellow yet powerful sound often featured in symphonies, concertos, and chamber music. With its versatile range and expressive capabilities, the French horn captivates listeners with emotive melodies and majestic fanfares.

Why Play the French Horn?

Being an accomplished French horn (or simply horn) player means you’ll always have a gig waiting for you. Why? Schools, orchestras, jazz combos, and marching bands can’t get enough of the smooth, regal tone of the horn. This granddaddy of the brass family has roots in signal horns dating back thousands of years. And whereas trumpet players may be in plentiful supply, organizations are always seeking the skilled hands and mellifluous tone of a French horn in their numbers.

French Horn FAQs

Why is it called a French horn?

Only in the orchestral world could an English instrument developed by a German horn player (Heinrich Stölzel) become known as the “French horn!” The French horn’s name was popularized in the late 18th century to distinguish it from the cor anglais (English horn). In response, the International Horn Society has recommended that the French horn simply be called the “horn” — a name that still endures in some circles.

What are the main types of French horns?

Common French horn types at Sweetwater include the single and double horns. Three-valve single horns are sometimes chosen by younger learners due to their lower weight and straightforward learning curve. Long-term learners tend to graduate to the more common double horn, which features a fourth valve (operated via thumb trigger) to unlock F and Bb voicings from the same instrument. This helps bridge gaps between the horn’s lower and higher registers.
