Trumpet vs. cornet and flugelhorn: what’s the difference?
These three horns may look similar — and, indeed, may even occupy the same registers and share fingerings. However, the trumpet stands alone with its unmistakably bright, focused, punchy, and cutting tone that defines marches and jazz standards.
The key to the trumpet’s distinctly “brassy” timbre is its uniform cylindrical bore (a.k.a. its inner chamber). The cornet and flugelhorn, being conical bore instruments, take on added degrees of darkness and richness, resulting in a mellower and more complex sound.
