About Trumpets

With a history that dates back to 1500 BCE, the trumpet stands as one of the oldest and most enduring brass instruments. Like fine wine, this horn has only improved with age, which is why it remains a cornerstone of orchestras, jazz combos, marching bands, and commercial music worldwide. Trumpets achieve their vibrant sound through the pressing and releasing of piston valves, allowing musicians to create a wide range of expressive timbres to suit virtually any musical style.

Whether you’re searching for your first trumpet or adding to your collection, Sweetwater is the place to finance or rent your next horn. Discover why this timeless instrument remains a favorite among musicians of all ages.

Trumpet FAQs

How much does a trumpet cost?

Trumpets can vary widely in price depending on the maker and materials used. At Sweetwater, we carry student horns starting at under $300 and professional horns that can push five figures. No matter your level, you can rest easy knowing our brass instrument technicians have given your horn the white glove treatment with our 40-point brass inspection, ensuring a great playing experience straight out of the case.

Who are some famous trumpeters?

Artists who have left their marks on the trumpeting world include Miles Davis, Wynton Marsalis, Dizzy Gillespie, Chet Baker, Lee Morgan, and, of course, the great Louis Armstrong.

How do I care for my trumpet?

In our experience, trumpets require less maintenance than some other brass instruments. Even so, it’s a good idea to establish a daily (empty and wipe), weekly (oil and grease), and monthly (deep clean) maintenance routine to keep your horn playing its best for years to come. For a more thorough look at trumpet maintenance that you can perform yourself, see our trumpet care and maintenance guide.

Trumpet vs. cornet and flugelhorn: what’s the difference?

These three horns may look similar — and, indeed, may even occupy the same registers and share fingerings. However, the trumpet stands alone with its unmistakably bright, focused, punchy, and cutting tone that defines marches and jazz standards.

The key to the trumpet’s distinctly “brassy” timbre is its uniform cylindrical bore (a.k.a. its inner chamber). The cornet and flugelhorn, being conical bore instruments, take on added degrees of darkness and richness, resulting in a mellower and more complex sound.

While it’s true that mouthpieces and technique can blur the lines between the sounds of these horns, our advice is to choose the one that best serves your group so you’re not fighting against physics down the road.
