Speaker Impedance
Impedance is one of the most critical factors in choosing the right guitar amp replacement speaker. Loading up a 16-ohm cabinet? No problem. Replacing a single driver on your 2x12-inch combo? We’ve got you covered.
You’ll want to select a speaker with the same impedance value as the amp it’s going to handle. At Sweetwater, we carry replacement guitar speakers with 4-ohm, 8-ohm, and 16-ohm ratings, which are by far the most common ratings.
Power Rating
When it comes to power rating, it all depends on the type of amplifier you’re using and how you intend to use it.
Playing a solid-state guitar amplifier? If that’s the case, then we recommend matching the power of your replacement speaker to the power of the amp (i.e., if you’re playing through a 50-watt amplifier, then we’d suggest using at least a 50-watt driver).
Rocking a tube amp? Since tube amps can churn out quite a bit more power when you drive them into distortion, we recommend a driver rated for significantly more power than the amp, especially if you like it loud and dirty. Thus, if you’re playing a 50-watt tube amp, then we suggest using a speaker rated for 75 watts or more. If you favor clean tones, then using a matched driver is usually fine.
