About Microphone Windscreens and Grilles

"The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind" may speak to some of life's dilemmas. But if that wind happens to be blowin' directly into your microphone while you're trying to perform or record, a better "answer" might be a windscreen.

Windscreens make excellent solutions for pernicious plosives and gale-force gusts. Sweetwater's selection of foam windscreens, fur windshields, and replacement mic grilles can help tame unwanted noise in the most challenging environments.

Windscreens and Windshields

Windscreens

Windscreens — sometimes called "clown noses" — are foam filters that slide over a handheld microphone to reduce the impact of wind, breathing, and plosives on the mic capsule. Windscreens are popular in live performances because they're inexpensive and effective at neutralizing this type of interference. A windscreen's dense foam is strong enough to resist air pressure yet permeable enough to apply minimal sonic coloration. A new windscreen also has the added benefit of "sanitizing" a shared mic from vocalist to vocalist..

Windshields and wind muffs

Windshields, on the other hand, are a costlier yet highly effective solution for keeping environmental noise from spoiling a recording. You'll often find these enshrouding shotgun mics on film sets or field recorders on location. Windshields are often made from synthetic fur or hair to minimize noise and handling while remaining as acoustically transparent as possible. The windshield's furry appearance has earned it several nicknames on set, including "dead cat" or "wombat" (both terms now coopted as official products from RODE).

Colored screens accessorize and streamline

We've all seen the garden-variety black foam windscreen. But did you know that you can also get them in a variety of different colors? In addition to adding a visual pop to your band's stage presentation, color-coding has practical applications. For instance, the sound engineer can place colored dots on the mixer faders coordinating with each colored windscreen. You can also use colored pop filters as a visual checklist to ensure all mics are accounted for at the end of the gig.

Replacement Mic Grilles and Caps

Many handheld microphones have some type of windscreen built in. Picture the ubiquitous Shure SM58, with its ball-shaped metal mesh grille housing a thin foam internal windscreen. This two-stage filtration system not only informs the sonic characteristics of the mic, but it can be quite effective at reducing wind noise and plosives on its own.

Are you missing a grille from your favorite microphone? Is it dented and tarnished beyond recognition? If it's a brand we sell, we mostly carry a replacement for it. We also stock a variety of microphone caps for headsets and lavaliers to keep your gear clean and operable from show to show.
