A Brief History of Roland Electronic Drum Sets

1985: The First Roland Electronic Kit

Roland has been leading the way in electronic drum tech since the mid-1980s. The company debuted their first official electronic drum set — the triangular DDR-30 Alpha Drum kit — to wild acclaim at the 1985 Science Expo in Tsukuba, Japan.

This kit was shown later that same year at the summer 1985 NAMM Show in New Orleans. Attendees at the time marveled at the Alpha Drum’s PCM-based kick, snare, and tom sounds, which delivered a surprising level of sophistication for an electronic kit of the era. MIDI implementation promised players even further options for stage and studio expansion.

1997: The Birth of Roland V-Drums

Fast-forward a decade, and Roland’s knack for translating the acoustic-drum-playing experience leads to the launch of the V-Drums series. The V-Drums series is credited as not just influencing but also revolutionizing electronic drum technology as we know it.

The first to market in the V-Drums lineup was the TD-10K in 1997. This kit was universally praised for its endless tweakability, allowing players to easily adjust shell dimensions, swap velocity curves, self-mix drum sounds, and even turn off/on virtual snare wires on the fly. The TD-10K was also lauded for its quiet and comfortable tunable mesh drumheads — a hallmark of the V-Drums series for decades to come.

The TD-10K’s groundbreaking sounds and features would later pave the way for such flagship kits as the TD-25K, TD-30KV, TD-50KV2, and VAD706 — still enjoyed by players to this day.
