What is a Synth Plug-in?

A synth plug-in (also referred to as a soft synth or a synth VST) is a computer program that emulates the performance of an analog or digital synthesizer. Synth plug-ins can be relatively simple, such as a collection of samples with a playback engine (like software versions of romplers), or they can use complex modeling algorithms to emulate analog synths, hybrid synths, and even create brand-new instruments that could only exist in the software realm. Most of these instruments respond to MIDI continuous controller (CC) messages similar to hardware synthesizers. You can program and sequence them within the software or use a MIDI keyboard controller for a more hands-on experience.

A synth plug-in can operate in two modes. First, it may function as a plug-in in a compatible host program, such as Pro Tools, FL Studio, SONAR, or another DAW. The synth plug-in must be written to support the plug-in format used by the host program, such as Virtual Studio Technology (VST), Avid Audio eXtension (AAX), or AudioUnites (AU). In addition, many synth plug-ins can function in standalone mode, which means that they can be played and programmed without requiring a host program to be open.

Which Plug-in Format Do I Need For My DAW?

Types of Synth Plug-ins

Analog Synth Plug-ins

These are the most popular synth plug-ins due to their warm, unpredictable character and the numerous options available. Analog synth plug-ins emulate the workflow, subtractive sound design, and unique sonic traits associated with hardware analog synths, relying on their voltage-controlled oscillators, filters, and amplifiers to re-create the experience of working on a golden-era synthesizer. Many analog synth plug-ins emulate classic hardware synths like the Roland JUNO-60, Moog Model-D, and many more. For synth newbies, analog-style synth plug-ins are recommended for learning synthesis principles.

Modular Synth Plug-ins

Much like analog synth plug-ins, many modular synth plug-ins emulate classic modular synths. For those unfamiliar with modular synths, they require users to physically connect separate modules together via patch cables to create a sound-producing signal path. Think of it as a way to design a custom synthesizer by combining various oscillators, filters, and modulators in unique ways. Modular synths are excellent for experimental sounds, but they are also more than capable of producing “bread and butter” patches, like bass, leads, plucks, and more.

Hybrid Synth Plug-ins

Hybrid synths encompass many types of synthesis presented in a single device or software program, including granular synthesis, FM synthesis, wavetable synthesis, sample-based synthesis, and subtractive synthesis. For the most part, hybrid synths give you the most flexibility when creating never-before-heard sounds and textures. With analog and modular synth plug-ins, you are bound to oscillators, filters, and LFOs for producing tones. In contrast, hybrid synths provide various options for creating sounds with few limitations.

Bass Synth Plug-ins

As the name suggests, bass synth plug-ins are primarily for creating bass sounds. They often feature built-in sequencers for quickly generating parts. Dedicated hardware bass synths are responsible for many iconic and memorable bass lines, and now you can create your own from the comfort of your computer. Bass synth plug-ins may emulate a classic model — such as the Roland TB-303 — or their unique, modern design. Whereas analog and hybrid synth plug-ins can produce an infinite number of sounds, bass synth plug-ins are essentially one-trick ponies — but it’s a great trick!

Cinematic Sound Effects and Sound-design Synth Plug-ins

Film composers and foley artists approach synthesizers differently than most musicians. While they rely on synths for musical elements, they also tap into their sound-design potential to create atmospheric sounds and special audio effects. Cinematic sound effects and sound-design synths are similar to hybrid synth plug-ins in their multifaceted approach to synthesis, but they take things a step further by relying more heavily on multitimbral sounds paired with powerful effects engines.

Vocal Synth Plug-ins

Just because you’re a great producer or beat maker doesn’t mean you’re a great singer. So, what do you do when you need a vocal track right now and don’t have access to a talented vocalist to sing your topline or a group of background singers to fill out an arrangement? Check out one of the numerous vocal synth plug-ins available at Sweetwater. These purpose-built synths offer a wide variety of pre-recorded vocal lines (or vowel and consonant sounds) you can chain together to create phrases — some even include detailed controls for changing throat and mouth shapes. Plus, many vocal synths incorporate elements of vocoders and talk boxes along with additional synth engines. Whether you’re sketching out ideas or creating keeper tracks, vocal synth plug-ins are an essential tool in any contemporary producer’s plug-in arsenal.

Should You Go with Emulations or Unique Synth Plug-ins?

With so many synth plug-ins on the market today, it’s hard to know which one will fit your needs the best. An important decision to make when buying your first (or next) synth plug-in is if you want an emulation of a classic hardware synth or a unique synth plug-in that approaches sound design in a new way.

First, ask yourself what kind of music you want to create. If you’re interested in re-creating the legendary synth sounds of the ’70s and ’80s, a la Vangelis, John Carpenter, or Tangerine Dream, then synth emulation plug-ins are right up your alley! Roland, Arturia, GForce, UVI, Cherry Audio, and others offer many faithful software emulations to satisfy your synthwave desires!

Those looking to utilize modern, bespoke sounds may be interested in unique synth plug-ins, like Spectrasonics Omnisphere, Arturia Pigments 5, UVI Falcon 3, Native Instruments Komplete, and a host of cutting-edge products from Output, Kilohearts, Tracktion, and more. Because these synths are free from the constraints of legacy hardware, they often present new and inspiring ways to approach synthesis. They’re ideal for producers, sound designers, and artists driven to create their unique signature patches.

You can’t go wrong with either choice! Many musicians, producers, and composers use both emulations and unique synth plug-ins in their productions.
