What is a Synth Plug-in?
A synth plug-in (also referred to as a soft synth or a synth VST) is a computer program that emulates the performance of an analog or digital synthesizer. Synth plug-ins can be relatively simple, such as a collection of samples with a playback engine (like software versions of romplers), or they can use complex modeling algorithms to emulate analog synths, hybrid synths, and even create brand-new instruments that could only exist in the software realm. Most of these instruments respond to MIDI continuous controller (CC) messages similar to hardware synthesizers. You can program and sequence them within the software or use a MIDI keyboard controller for a more hands-on experience.
A synth plug-in can operate in two modes. First, it may function as a plug-in in a compatible host program, such as Pro Tools, FL Studio, SONAR, or another DAW. The synth plug-in must be written to support the plug-in format used by the host program, such as Virtual Studio Technology (VST), Avid Audio eXtension (AAX), or AudioUnites (AU). In addition, many synth plug-ins can function in standalone mode, which means that they can be played and programmed without requiring a host program to be open.
