About Acoustic Grand Pianos

So, you’ve decided to grace your home, school, or house of worship with an acoustic grand piano. Congratulations! The grand piano is the mother of all musical instruments. Encompassing over seven octaves, its range covers the entire symphony orchestra from the lowest notes of the harp to the highest notes of the piccolo.

Acoustic Grand Piano FAQs

When was the piano invented?

Evolving from 17th-century clavichords and harpsichords, the piano was invented around 1700 by Bartolomeo Cristofori, a harpsichord maker already well versed in the design of stringed keyboard mechanisms. Compared to its predecessors, the new fortepiano allowed unprecedented control over playing dynamics.

How did the piano evolve over time?

Development accelerated in the ensuing decades with the invention of a pedal that lifted all the dampers from the strings (the forerunner of the modern sustain pedal) and other innovations by piano makers spurred on their quest to please superstar pianist/composers of the era such as Bach, Haydn, and Mozart. In lockstep with the Industrial Revolution, the piano continued to evolve with improved materials and more robust construction, additional octaves, and higher volume capabilities. Piano companies such as Broadwood courted the favor of Ludwig van Beethoven with more powerful piano designs as the composer pushed the envelope with larger, more demanding orchestrations in the face of encroaching deafness.

When was the acoustic grand piano developed?

Driven by the requisites of 19th-century virtuosi such as Frederic Chopin and Franz Liszt, other piano innovations followed, including the one-piece cast-iron frame, improved steel wire, aliquot stringing, the over-strung scale, double-escapement action, and more. By 1900, the modern acoustic grand piano as we know it had pretty much arrived; and, in 1902, Yamaha introduced its first grand piano. Today, across rock, jazz, pop, and classical genres, Yamaha is the piano of choice for artists as diverse as Chick Corea, Paul McCartney, Alicia Keys, and Elton John; the legendary classical virtuoso Glenn Gould made his final recordings on a Yamaha CF II. And Yamaha is the brand of acoustic grand most often found in world-class recording studios, including Sweetwater Studios here on our Fort Wayne campus.
