sE Electronics DM1 Dynamite 1-channel Active Inline Preamp Reviews

Active In-line Preamp for Passive Dynamic and Ribbon Mics with 28dB of Gain

Passive dynamic and ribbon microphones sound absolutely incredible. However, these microphones’ naturally low output is a major impediment to using them on quiet sources or during live performances. With the sE Electronics DM1 Dynamite in-line preamp, however, those days are over. This compact unit plugs directly into the output of your microphone. Feed it a little phantom power, and the DM1 delivers +28dB of clean, clear preamplification. In other words, your mic signals hit their destination at an adequate level for proper gain staging. The DM1’s Class A circuitry, high-quality FETs, and low impedance ensure a consistent signal and very low noise — even over long cable runs. Help your mics perform up to their full potential with the sE Electronics DM1 Dynamite.

sE Dynamite

By Clifford S. from Chicago, IL
Music Background: Gigging Musician,Songwriter,Home Recording.

As usual,'m a Gigging Musician,Songwriter & Hone Recording Novice on a budget. Currently Saving up for a Shure SM7b Dynamic Mic. But until I'm able to get one-I'm currently Recording Vocals with Shure SM58,which has beey low output & requires high vol level from my Interface, which can pick up "noise" from my Untrested room. After reading reviews(on Sweetwater) and comparing with other Mic Signal Boosters,I chose the SE Dynamite. And what a difference a Line Signal Booster makes! Had to turn the Vol Interface from 3/4 down to 1/4 Vol level. Gives an ample amount of "Clean" Boost. Makes my SM58 sound Pretty Good. Can't wait to hear it on an SM7b. Kudos to MY Salesperson person Dave Brow, who takes the time to help me find what I need.

Dynamite is the bomb!

By Host, M.

I was having big issues with my Behringer XR18 not clipping when turning up the gain. Had to raise gain just to hear myself in recordings and through headphones. I'm using a Shure SM7B, and apparently it requires lot's of power that my system doesn't provide. Installing the Dynamite inline Preamp did the trick. Like, wham!, Out of the box, I was recording awesome, clean sound with no more trouble. Plus, it's a great design and comes in a cool box!

Great idea that really works

By Rocky G. from Rutherfordton, NC
Music Background: Keyboardist, singer, sound person.

These preamps make so much sense, and they are perfect for making a dynamic mic into a condenser type mic without all the feedback problems associated with true condenser mics. My favorite thing is to gain stage a vocal mic, have the singer use it and plug one of these inline, turn on the phantom power and turn the gain to 0 and have the same person sing into then. The look is priceless, and the mic becomes another instrument you're not on top of and creating proximity effects and trying to EQ it to cut through the mix. IT's the best money you will ever spend on your sound system.

Is phantom power blocked to the dynamic or ribbon mic?

By Sweetwater Customer from PA
Music Background: Long-time piano & B3 player, bandleader, & symphony orchestrator.

The specs do not say - neither for the new Behringer MicLink -, but it's important for many dynamic
ibbon mics not to pass through the phantom power.

For low gain mics.

By Cristian from San Antonio, TX
Music Background: Working my way to professional...

It's clean; I checked the input in my DAW and frequencies are a perfect match but for a peak at 13k that's visually there in the graphics but I can't hear.

Does the job as expected and it's out of the way (I place it after a 3 feet cable and before the main I was going to use); I can see it's in the line when I set up and do the soundcheck because of the color, and I can use a zip tie to fix it to the mic column (pretty sure it'll take all kinds of abuse, this THING; it also seems that in a bind it may be even useful as a weapon, so tough it feels).

I considered the TNT and used a friend's TNT a couple of times and I don't find the extra settings useful, you have to remember what you did with the setting in each line and you end up losing more time and typically you do that with the console anyway so the straight forward dB gain ONLY is the key.

Small, simple, satisfying

By Michael F. from Grand Haven, MI
Music Background: 10+ years

It's small, moderate weight but light enough that I trust it resting on my SM7B. It's so simple that all you need to do is turn on 48v (Phantom Power). It's satisfying in that it's so quick to install and remove, takes much less space than the Cloudlifter. The packaging is pretty awesome also.

I use this when I'm doing soft vocals, or using it as a general speaking mic, as it boosts the signal by 28Db without raising the noise floor (at least I didn't hear it from my Adam Audio T7V's). If I'm recording my amp or my friends heavy vocals on the SM7B, then I will remove the Dynamite (as it does it's job a little too well for that application). This little guy makes my SM7B the most universal mic I have.

Wow what an improvement

By Michael B. from 1303 Village rd Smithfield Maine 04978
Music Background: 40+ years playing 5 years recording

I hooked it up to a shure sm57 that honestly just needed the gain cranked on to record correctly before the dynamite. With this attached it's a completely different experience. The gain on my interface is turned way down and the recording is crystal clear. Going to try it on a few more of my mics but I'm sold. We'll worth the money.

Great companion

By Mike K. from Yucaipa, CA

It was a toss up between the DM1 or the Cloudlifter. Price was right, so I purchased the DM1 for my Sure SM7b and what a difference! I connected this in front of my RodeCastor Pro and it sounds incredible. Would definitely purchase a few more as spares. Small, convenient, but would not want to explain to a TSA agent why I am traveling with these...:)
Thank you Patrick for all the help!

I'm floored...

By Christopher O. from Vauxhall, NJ

This is an incredible piece of gear here. I was looking at a CLoudlifter and the Klark Teknik CM-1. I've had a cloudlifter in the past but was open to another solution this time around given the price and I never felt "wow'd" by it, so why not test a new unit. The Klark Teknik had the best price and I was impressed with a few Youtube reviews, but they're currently backed up on orders. That lead me to this unit.

Ohhhhhh my God! I am VERY happy I stumbled upon this one. I'm using an SM57 into a WA73. The WA73 is absolutely not meant to be pushed that hard, I can hear a lot of internal noise with the valves are all the way open, so I want to keep it in the unit's sweet spot. I plugged this baby in, turned on the phantom power.. oh my lord. My sm57 has never sounded this good. I've got the WA73 set to 40db gain, and the output trim knob set to 50%..... I can hear every single detail of my SM57 at the moment.

You want to know how good this mic works now? I'm recording in my control room and I didn't realize there was a fly in the room, until I put my headphones on about to record and could here it buzzing clear as day. Like... it was LOUD. I can hear the lawnmower down the street. And I just heard my kitten in the other room giving a light meow while I'm typing this. As I'm typing this with the mic on, I can hear every nuance of me pressing the keys on my keyboard. This mic is more than usable now... and I'm able to operate my preamp at an acceptable level with much less internal noise.

Great job SE Electronics. This has "wow factor".

Made the difference

By Sweetwater Customer

A sweetwater rep suggested to get this mic booster to help with clean gain when using my Rode Podmic and Yamaha MG10XU. It worked and made a huge difference! Now I don't have to boost the gain on the mixer. I actually did a review of this set up on my YouTube channel if interested search LCC LEARN CREATE CAPITALIZE. Thanks again sweetwater!

Gain boost for less money than the competition

By Brien H.

I make podcasts out of my home office, so all of my gear is centered around that. Most of the home podcasting community, for some reason, is obsessed with the Cloudlifter in tandem with the Focusrite Scarlett series of interfaces. I've never used either of those, because I'm confident that I can get the same performance out of a less expensive Presonus interface, and now this sweet little guy.

The Dynamite packs a real punch. Before getting it, I was setting the input gain on my Presonus AudioBox 22VSL about 3/4 of the way toward the max; with the the Dynamite, I get comparable levels, and a smoother response, at just under 1/2 of max. (This is with an EV RE-320.)

The Dynamite does everything I expected it to do, and I paid noticeably less for it than I would have for a Cloudlifter.

Game Changer

By Paulo

I was in need of an in-line preamp for a Rode Podmic/Scarlett Solo setup. Although the setup worked well, I had to turn the gain on the Scarlett Solo to almost 90% to get some decent volume out of my mic. I knew I was going to need a preamp but I was hesitant to get one as most that I saw were way too expensive. Most reviews that I saw using a Podmic used a CL-1 Cloudlifter... I did some research and I found a decent alternative, the DM1 Dynamite. Not only was it a cheaper option, but seeing as how I could buy it from Sweetwater (who are awesome when it comes to customer service), really gave me the confidence to try it out. Immediately I saw results. My gain is now set to around 40% (if that) and honestly, I don't think I am missing anything by not going with the CLoudlifter. I knew what I needed, and Sweetwater provided the DM1. I got what I paid for, and so far so good.

Adds Distortion

By Sweetwater Customer

I wanted to like this, but I just can't get it to work for me. Waste of money. It does increase the sound of my Shure SM7B, but I always hear distortion when recording. The distortion is not as obvious in the recordings, but it's still there. I want a clean sound, and I can't get it with this product. Maybe it's a lemon, but it's too late to return it.

This pack a real punch

By Gary B. from Keizer Oregon
Music Background: Life long professional musician and studio owner

I had bought what was supposed to be the perfect match line preamp booster to a specific mic I’d bought. It ended up being worthless and wasted money. I was apprehensive when reading the same kind of promises about the dynamite. I purchased it and it has been an immediate miracle for my mic. This thing is incredible and I couldn’t recommend it any higher. ITS FABULOUS!!!!!

It Works!

By Mike S. from Walker, WV
Music Background: Amateur Podcaster

The DM1 arrived today and I put it straight to work. I've coupled it with my sE V7 and Tascam DR-40. I set the level input to 30. Just 30! That's less than when I use the Tascam's onboard mics! As I was setting up for a recording, it began to pour the rain outside. Even so, it wasn't picked up by the V7. The Dynamite has some heft to it, too. It doesn't feel cheap by any means. Yeah, it cost the same as my microphone, but it's definitely worth it! An sE V7 and DM1... I couldn't be happier!

Yup, works as advertised

By Sweetwater Customer

I recently bought a matched pair of mics for our two vocalists. They're nice, but have lower output than the cheap mics we've been using, and I had to turn the preamps on the mixer up pretty high (above about 80%) to get acceptable output. I thought I'd take a chance on one of these and see if it helps, and so I did a side-by-side comparison. I get roughly the same volume now with the mixer preamp turned only to about 40%. Way more headroom than I need. Nice simple inexpensive solution. I'm buying the second one.

Best of it's kind.

By Daniel M.

I use the DM1 with a Shure SM7b, a notoriously gain-hungry microphone. I also use a Focusrite Scarlett Solo Second Generation with it. This piece of equipment allowed me to drop my gain to about 35-40% virtually eliminating any Pre-amp noise. I definitely recommend this, especially if you use an SM7b.

I have an Sm7b and needed a boost for it. This piece of equipment right here definitely did the job. No hissing noises at all. It"s a very nice in-line mic pre and definitely at a very good price!!!!!!!!!!

Clean and Solid Signal Boost

By Jay F. from Reading, PA
Music Background: Engineer. Producer

I can't compare it to the Cloudlifter, but I can say that it greatly improved the sound of my Shure SM7B. I have a much cleaner signal now. I like how I can plug it directly into the mic itself so I don't need to use a second cable.

By Len W. from Winston Salem NC

My 3 piece band can get loud and vocals get lost. I used this for the first time last Sat, and IT WORKS !!
My vocal volume setting is now half what it used to be. Does just what it says. No coloring of the sound.

You have to be sure to push the Phantom Power on the mixer which has no effect at all on the other channels.

You won't be disappointed.

Real Dynamite!

By Sound-Guy from Colorado
Music Background: Decades of recording and mixing, video and audio

Although I haven't been recording live shows for years, I have wished I had more clean gain for some dynamic mics and ribbons in my studio. The Dynamite looked like a possible solution, so I talked my
'better-half' into getting me one for the holidays. Running quick sound tests with a couple mics indicated it really does pump up the gain. And using a variable input impedance preamp, the gain stays constant until the load drops below 300 Ohms (dropped about 3 db with a 150 Ohm load).

I ran quantitative tests with Room EQ Wizard and found the gain of mine to be 28.9 dB and the noise level almost unmeasurable (about 0.4 uV referenced to the input, or -125.7 dBu, which meets the published spec). Distortion is low, 0.1%, constant level from 10 Hz up to 12 kHz, and almost entirely second harmonic. I can't measure audio above 24 kHz in my studio, so 12 kHz is the highest frequency I can use to measure a second harmonic, and a second harmonic 60 dB below the fundamental is inaudible.

From my tests the Dynamite truly meets its claims with lots of clean gain, ability to drive a low impedance, and is very ruggedly built.

Dynamite Pre-Amp

By Nate

Works great with the SM7B

November 14, 2018

Lots of gain for sure

By Ryan from Asheville, NC
Music Background: YouTuber, Studio Owner, Recordist

Overall thoughts:
You can talk into an SM7B with a Behringer UMC404HD interface and need no additional gain in order to have a recording level of -18 in the DAW. Great for spoken word for both the SM7B and R121 with no additional gain needed from inexpensive interfaces like the UMC404. It seemed that I was getting around 30 dB of gain out of the Dynamite in my own tests, but this could be too much gain for anything louder than acoustic instruments. There's a YouTube video of these tests.

Gain:
Fantastic for spoken word, podcasting, and acoustic instruments. You can use a dynamic mic or passive ribbon mic (Such as the Royer R121) for quiet sources like shaker, acoustic guitar, mountain dulcimer, or banjo.

Sound:
The sound is very good. I got a little more high end out of the microphones, and it seems that the dynamics were a little more lively and dynamic. Transients just a touch more punchy. This was a big plus.

My Reservations:
Any source that is loud you will NEED a pad on your preamp. It'll be too much gain. In my SM7B into the Behringer test, a singer would have been too loud. Use the 20 dB pad and you will be fine. It's also too much gain for bass guitar, electric guitar with OR without the pad. It was just way too much gain and the preamp was overdriven. Drum overheads with passive ribbons might be ok if used with a pad at the preamp.

It's beautiful when a product works as advertised.

By R. .

I learned when trying to make some spoken word recordings that the SM57 needs a big preamp boost which my interface (a Zoom H4n) did not provide. Using 100% gain yielded at tops a -20 dB level for normal speech. The quality of the signal was muffled and there was a ton of room noise. With this product I could reduce the gain to 50 and get a sparklingly clear signal. I was also able to speak farther from the mic, which was a better capture for my voice.

I chose this over the Cloudlifter for my application to reduce the need for another mic cable and to save a little money. I'm glad I did. The simplicity of use is just as great as its performance. Remember you will need to supply phantom power, however.

Thanks to Aaron Regenold for alerting me of this new product. I wouldn't have heard of it by myself.
