Lehle Mono Volume Pedal for Electric Instruments Reviews

Volume Pedal with Buffered Direct Output, Adjustable Gain, VCA Control, and Polymer Bearings

Are you looking for a more precise and powerful volume pedal? The Lehle Mono Volume Pedal may be what you're looking for. Forgoing the typical potentiometer-driven design, Lehle went with a magnet-controlled VCA design for unheard of precision in a volume pedal. The gain control lets you set the volume range from -92dB to 0dB, and you can even add a +10dB boost if you need it. A direct output lets you send your unaffected signal to another amp, a tuner, or a mixer. We're big fans of volume pedals for all types of occasions and instruments at Sweetwater. The rugged Lehle Mono Volume pedal is a premium volume pedal for any type of rig.

Worth every penny.

By Steven J. from Metuchen, NJ
Music Background: Alt-country, rock, Americana/folk, and jazz.

After using Ernie Ball pedals for years, I decided to splurge. There is no comparison. The Lehle, set at unity gain, does not color your tone at all. Absolutely silent operation and smooth pedal action. I just bought a 2nd one for my pedal steel guitar.

Initial Impression

By Bryan C. from Owensboro, KY
Music Background: I'm in a band, we perform live

First, let me state that I've never been a big fan of volume pedals. However, they seem to be the best solution for the way I want to manage my guitar volume "on-the-fly" so to speak. My main reason for selecting this one, the Lehle Mono Volume Pedal, is that I wanted flexibility in being able to hook up any guitar or instrument to this pedal without losing any tone. The Lehle is supposed to be good at that function. I also wanted a dependable mechanism that handled the volume sweep smoothly. Again, the Lehle is supposed to be good at this also. My initial impression is that the Lehle is going to live up to its reputation. The true test will be revealed over time, therefore I can only attest to how it impresses me with only a month or so of use on my board. I like the way it feels under my foot, meaning how the sweep responds. I've always had trouble controlling other volume pedals. I guess I am not that coordinated between playing guitar, singing and then trying to tweak my guitar volume with my foot in the middle of the song. So, I need all the help I can get. So far, I have only used this in practice, where volume control may not be as critical as during a live performance. I have also yet to come up with the best volume setting strategy at the mixer to maximize the use of the pedal. None of that is really about the pedal other than how it responds to my attempts to control it. Compared to the other volume pedals that I have used in the past, the Lehle is a great improvement in all respects.

Most Incredible Volume Pedal!

By Bill G. from Durham, NC
Music Background: Avid lifelong musician, guitarist, vocalist & song writer

I have been using volume pedals on my guitar rig for many decades & have tried 3 different brands/models before buying this Lehle Mono model.
This pedal hands down is the best I have ever owned and it's not even close! I just replaced my Dunlop model with low friction band drive which replaced my ancient DeArmon volume pot pedal.
For starters, the Dunlop caused serious tone suck & made my rig noisy when using it in concert with my other pedals. Also the sweep pales in companion to the Lehle.
I was very reluctant to pay this much for a volume pedal, but it's worth every penny as it's a superior product in every aspect:
Sweep is phenomenal!
It COMPLETELY eliminated tone suck!
Doing guitar swells of chords, single notes & octaves all sound magnificent!
Build quality is fantastic.

All that and ...

By Frank M. from New York
Music Background: Lifetime Begginermediate

For two years now I have been putting together a (small bedroom) dedicated music room. Guitars, amps, pedals, cables and much more... (Thanx to Matt Zuleger and the Sweetwater team). Trial n error as to placement of it all and the one thing that always annoyed me was the loud pop unplugging an plugging in (newby i suppose) so I would try not to step on all the cords and pedals as reached over top to the back of the amp to flip standby switch. Then After getting all situated with my next new favorite guitar I'd strum and nothing ... back on the stand....step and reach over again and flip that dern switch again and start over. I remember thinking if I only had a foot pedal for that switch too.
Then I realized I Did !! Volume OFF !!!

I purchased the lehle for all the other reasons and great reviews posted here and happy to say it's All that and a Killer Off Switch.

The Best Volume Pedal on the Market!

By JVIOLIN from Sarasota, FL
Music Background: Violinist, Composer, and Multi-Instrumentalist

Ok, so I am little crazy about volume pedals... I had a Telonics, but this is better.I also had a Hilton, Goodrich, Visual Sound, and a few others. Sure the Telonics was more expensive than this, but this pedal is just perfect as it is! It really keeps and maintains your tone, and in fact, makes it better! You can add a slight about of boost if you want to your signal and you can run this pedal in 9v, 12, or even 15v with the CIOKS DC7. I do admit, I ripped the band aid off, and I just use the volume pedal without the rubber feet. You can add another rubber pad to your pedal if you like, the only downside to me was the appearance of the pedal. But you can make this pedal look as cool as you want. The rubber pads come off easy without any damage to the pedal whatsoever. Under the pedal is just metal. I am very particular about my tone, especially playing multiple instruments like violin, mandolin, guitar, and bass. This pedal just makes everything sound better! Friends don't let friends play Ernie Balls. Ok, just get this!

The best volume pedal ever

By James R. from New York
Music Background: Semi-pro

I can't be more thankful for the rich tone that this baby delivers. The magnet technology is outstanding. No more stupid pots sucking your tone or stupid strings with inaccuracy.
I have being playing with this babies since they first came. So now my second pedal board is enjoying another one to maintain that tone that we always dream off.

Finally a volume control that won’t wear out.

By Joe M. from TN

I've owned just about every volume pedal known to man. This pedal is crazy expensive but it's active, doesn't rely on friction based parts, and doesn't have some kind of exclusive wall wart.

It powers up great with my pedal power 2+. It is dead quiet. It also cleans up my input signal so my guitar sounds like my guitar even though it's being dragged through a bunch of pedals.

10/10 would spend the money again

Changes the tone

By Matt M.

It changes the tone of my guitar. I play through a fender 57 custom twin and the saturated tone that it creates is altered in a synthetic way. If this pedal had a bypass it would be great. Otherwise it's built like a tank. I had a similar issue with the lehle a/b switch.

The Bomb!

By Sweetwater Customer from Louisiana
Music Background: Singer,Guitarist

It"s one of those things a lot of guitarist would laugh and say you paid what for a volume pedal? Mainly because they don"t know. What I mean is you really have to have a decerning ear and that just maybe wasted on us audiophile like guitarist who have worked and tweaked out tone to the point of it being recognized as your own sound.

Straight into a TwoRock Classic Reverb Signature 100/50 I went with the Lehle at unity gain there is no sound difference. No coloring or tonal loss. The buffering is fine. I use this at end of my drive board like a noise gate. Also after burning up my Jackson and Fender volume knobs to heat and friction doing volume swells it was time. I researched for 6 months. It came down to a Telonics or the Lehle. I needed a great buffer anyway as all my pedals are true bypass.
On my second board that goes into the effects loop has all the rotary and delays and reverbs which allow usage of the Lehle perfect.

I suggest do your homework when buying any pedal but something like a volume pedal can wear out. Not here. No string. It"s all magnet and the Hall Effect which measures what you are doing. To many of my buddies wore out potentiometers and broke plastic parts when I was growing up on cheap quality wah- wah and volume pedals.

Best Volume Pedal on the amarket

By Matthew D.

Best volume pedal on the market . No sctrachy pots or peditiometers. No strings or gears to fix . This this thing is magic the way it works with magnetic calibration it uses instead . Sweeps are fluid and is adjustable it you need less or more restiance . Built like a tank and quiet honestly it"s so sexy on my pedal board . I think where this pedal really won me over is when I used it for recording , it was noiseless ! Well worth the money if you"re looking a quality volume pedal that you won"t have to replace over and over again .

No Slide Around Pedal

By Krist G. from Georges Mills, NH

The Lehle Mono peda; is used with the Korg PA4X keyboard.
This pedal is smooth and very accurate. It is heavy due to it's rugged construction. It will not slide
around like the plastic models. In short, the Lehle Mono Volume just simply works GREAT!

Heads and shoulders above the standards, and more transparent than my prior favorite, the Hilton. It"s expensive, but you won"t regret it.

Edit/Update to my previous review

By Carmelo from Fort Worth, TX
Music Background: Semi-Pro, Student, Live, Studio

Just as an update after a large shootout I did, the Lehle continued to prove it had a clangy top end with suppressed bloom/air and a funny low mid harmonic wallop. In my rig I have a microtube preamp to put before anything and a pickup emulator to put at the end of the chain. I would say that in the context it's almost not noticeable and the only pedal I could find to edge it out was the Telonics FP-100 Pro model, not the standard. I am going to end up selling the Lehle because it lacks functionality and quality to the other one but that's also a $550 volume pedal built because they have a passion for it and not as an enterprise. You couldn't go wrong either way, but you know who you are, if you like to feel your guitar and are discriminating you're going to have to spend nearly 600 to get a volume pedal that is starting to enter the discussion of perfect but by no means is by itself.

Very Good, but Needlessly Flawed

By Carmelo from Fort Worth, TX
Music Background: Guitarist, Vocalist, Studio, Live, Production, Post Production

I very much like this volume pedal. I have never used one before and bought a couple to try. The Boss FV-500H is a total joke... I can't believe that's an "industry standard"... it wasn't even usable for me. I like the Lehle quite a bit and wish I could like it more. The only option I know of better than this would be the Telonics volume pedal but goodness it's expesnive!

Here is the benefit of the Lehle. Very pleasing pedal to me, fantastic construction, super smooth and usable, so natural. It is a joy to modulate your gain structure with this pedal.

Here are the drawbacks for me: Firstly and mostly, the buffer has way too much presence. They say it doesn't change the sound - sorry it definitely does you'd have to have no tone ears/numb fingers or be listening to it in a system that is very convoluted to not hear it. It adds too much presence to the signal - this results in losing the natural looseness and breath of the guitar when plugged straight in as it tightens up the signal while adding this sweet treble sound... but it emphasizes the attack too much. I've tried running cable after it but then it just sounds like a dark clanky sound instead of eliminating the clank. It does sound good into a Klon they balance out. The buffer is my main complaint, I can't imagine them feeling confident enough to say it doesn't change the sound... I'd almost prefer good ol' tone suck. Mainly this cheap sounding active circuit robs you of the feel of the instrument so I'm trying to find a way to work around it. I haven't been able to get a solution from Sweetwater so I'm going to Lehle now (I did get the thumbs up that having a passive pickup emulator designed to put after it and run a buffer before it might help but that's as much info as I got). Number 2: The pedal doesn't get tight enough, in a gig it's easy to wobble on it when you take your foot on and off. The other gripes are small. I'm still trying to figure out if I need a minimum volume control.. that seems like something that should be standard on a 300 dollar volume pedal. They have released the Mono Volume 90 but it's not in stock yet. If the minimum volume doesn't change the shape and resolution of the sweep it would be pointless to me anyway, I just want more throw for less volume shift.

While this review may seem harsh (much like the awful presence obtusity of the buffer) and thin on kindness (like the low end after it's gone through this pedal).... it's still the best volume pedal I've tried and it is largely frustrating that they decided to release it with these flaws. I hope Sweetwater or Lehle can provide me a workaround for this. I am playing with a 59 LP, 57 Strat, Fender amp, all custom builds not vintage. A Klon Centaur helps the pedal sound normal. They should not be putting that much presence into the buffer without some sort of impedance control and you should be able to tighten the pedal a bit more... nobody wants to deal with modding a super expensive volume pedal to get it to do something it should do from the factory. I think if I can address these issues though it might be just the ticket. If I didn't have to pay for so much shipping I might be apt to A/B it to a Mission and post the video to youtube but I'd rather just go play music.

Sweet

By Bradical A.

This pedal is amazing. The dynamic sound range is apparent throughout the entire rasnge of movement, especially with a little extra juice from the boost. Speaking of movement this pedal is delightfully smooth. I have it screwed to my pedalboard where it is now a perminant fixture.

Buttery bandaid

By JO from NM
Music Background: Really good musicist

Sure it may look like someone slapped a bandaid on a chocolate bar but it sounds excellent! It also feels excellent. I just wish it were like their Sunday driver w/switch pedal in that you could switch off the buffer when using an active instrument which is already buffered. and as we all know ;) you don't want to double buffer a signal unless you have to. cheers

I'm still learning this pedal; like all other pedals. I found that I have it at the beginning of pedal chain/control the over-drive pedal and controls my guitar volume too.

Lehle Mono Volume - The best

By Pablo G. from Las Vegas
Music Background: Professional Musician

By far the best volume pedal. No parts to be worn. No tone loss. No scratchy pots to deal with. Great buffer, perfect action. If you can afford it, it is a game changer. I'm a professional musician and I'm happy I made the investment. It's build like it will last for the rest of my days too. I've been waiting years for a proper volume pedal like this to come by and leave behind the 60's potentiometer based technology. Definitely worth its value, ages ahead of Vertex of any other modded Boss or Ernie Ball stuff.

Excellent Volume Pedal!

By Eric T. from GA

What I really like about this Lehle Volume Pedal is not only how SMOOTH it is, but the RANGE of sweep. It's sweep goes from barely off the bottom (heel down) to toe down. It allows for extremely well-crafted volume swells and although it has an adjustable tension, I've never used it in the time I've owned it. At first I was not crazy about the color and look, but I like it now- it's really grown on me. The build quality appears to be amazingly good. I know that electronics go bad from time to time, but because the method used to control volume is Hall effect sensors, I anticipate the input jack to wear out far before anything else does. I would say that if you are into big, ambient music (especially contemporary Worship style) then this is a dream come true, at a really good price point considering all the other pedals that will have a band or string break eventually. When you add it up (and consider it's an active pedal) then it's like buying two of any other decent volume pedal, except it sounds cleaner, has a better sweep, and wont wear out as fast.

Oh, It Feels So Good

This pedal is expensive, but I don't regret my decision. It is incredibly responsive and accurate. It's rugged, but the pedal movement is smooth. Finally, it just looks amazing.

Awesome!!!!

By John G. from NJ
Music Background: Worship music

I bought this pedal with no review or demo because I trusted Lehle based on their reputation and my experience & I can say that this pedal delivered. I was using an Ernie ball mvp for a board that is shared by an acoustic and electric guitar. This pedal has no tone suck or anything on hiZ or loZ. It has a better response for swells and smooth adjustable feel! Most importantly I think it don't color the tone compared to a Goodrich or Hilton, that is based on my experience. Why do you think pro guitar players use Ernie ball thru-tone? This pedal does it differently but with the same results, better feel and cooler look!!!!
