Music Background: Took my first drum lesson in 1970...still learning.

I am very happy with this set of drums.
The price was in my range, the finish of the drums was excellent and they sound pretty good too.

Tuning was easy and they do hold their tune.
The stand is easily adjustable and very sturdy.
I highly recommend this set for those looking to explore hand drumming.

Excellent bang(ing) for the buck

Two-ply rubberwood shells (named for the resemblance to oak), good rims, decent heads (although they could stand a bit of very fine sanding and some palm oil), slightly smaller than pro drums (Aspires come in 10" 11" 12" vs the standard of 11" 11.75" 12.5" and they are a touch shorter).

Note that these drums come with slide mount hardware - way the heck better than earlier Aspires, which use four wingnuts. You pop them onto the stand in seconds. The stands are good ones, not cheap lightweight junk, but the drums can sway a bit when playing (a fairly common issue with stand-mounted congas). I added a third drum and popped a second slidemount onto the conga so that the three drums on two stands are far more rigid.

While other players may be different, I outgrew the Aspires fairly quickly. I moved up to the Matadors and converted the Aspires into some cool end tables (on Toca Sit Down baskets with tempered glass tops). If I ever have a gig where I'd like additional drums for playing melodies, I've got 'em. The Matadors - three-ply rubberwood - do have a better tone but they are more pricey.

I later moved up to the Giovannis (three-ply ash) - gorgeous tone and slaps but very pricey.

If you are just starting out or you want to expand beyond your standard drum kit, the Aspires are great and are very affordable.
