Trusted

By Martin from Colorado

Shure you could get a different SDC with 4 different cardioid patterns. And Shure, you can spend ALOT more money on boutique SDC mics. You Shure can spend less. These, as a complete kit, including a case to handle it all together, are plenty to get the job done.
Anything more and you're Shure-ly committing over kill. This set, brought to you by an industry leader, will get you where you want to be, without hype, a true, time tested workhorse most aShuredly.

Love these SDCs

By Shawn S. from Sugar Land, TX

I own several SDCs, including Neumann KM184, Sennheiser e614, Lewitt LCT 040 and Slate Digital ML-2. I can confidently put these up on anything and know I will get something that sounds good or great. I love the way they sound on strings, and they sound great on acoustic guitar and percussion. I was using my e614 in an orchestra pit on a violin for a live performance because I was trying to isolate it from nearby drums and figured the Sennheiser's polar pattern would help with spill. But I was unhappy with the sound I was getting, as it just didn't represent the full-bodied sound of the instrument. For kicks, I tried swapping in the KSM141. Gone was the "pinched", anemic sound I was hearing, replaced with a full, warm, beautiful, lifelike representation of the violin. And I was surprised at how focused the polar pattern was for a cardioid, with only a bit more bleed from the drums than before. I own two of these, and plan to add a pair of KSM137s to my collection since I only occasionally set the 141's to omni mode. Great workhorse mics with a warm, rich sound and low noise.

Great and Versatile

By Carrick from Metro Detroit
Music Background: Professional Vocalist, Drummer, Sound Tech, Recording Tech

I love these mics. For the past 6 months or so we have been using these as choir overhead mics. Sometimes we have an orchestra behind these mics, and we are fortunate to have one. With limited space, I'm able to select the Omni pattern and pick up both orchestra, and good annunciation of the choir still since we mic them close enough. With a nice neutral, but slightly bright presence, these mics do well on choir and drum overheads, as well as mic'ing the fretboard of a guitar and other instruments. Overall, these are a great workhorse to keep in your microphone tool box. Highly recommend!

Outstanding across the spectrum

By Michael E. from A forest in Minnesota
Music Background: Keyboard, guitar, midi, synth, audio .. just one of my many hobbies.

I've never owned what I would call an expensive microphone before, let alone 2 of them. My most expensive mic was a stereo Sony mic I paid $150 for 5 years ago.

I've only been playing with these KSM141 mics for half a day now and I'm very impressed and pleased with them. Real true to life sound reproduction across the audio spectrum .. well almost. The lower frequencies seem a bit too bassy. But, I've decided to consider this an advantage because 1) I can low cut, high pass, and EQ adjust to reduce this issue when desired, and 2) these stronger lower frequency sounds will be an advantage in some situations too, such as recording bands playing in the park in the summer. I'll have to test them during the next thunderstorm, see how they handle that.

While experimenting with the mics I was fooled a few times while listening to my test recordings. I.E. I thought my cat was calling for me so I removed my headphones and went to see what he wanted. But he was asleep. The meow was in the earlier recording I was listening to.

I'm not an audio or musical professional. I have had music lessons long ago. I was in a band as a teen. I can play keyboard and guitar (lead and base). But my interest in audio and musical gear is strictly for fun, an enjoyable hobby. I have though created some music, strictly for my enjoyment. But right now I'm more interested in producing and recording soundscapes. I bought these mics (along with other gear from Sweetwater, like my Akai MPC X and Waldorf Kyra) to create soundscapes. Nature, wildlife, ambient, and musical soundscapes.

I recently moved out of the noisy cities and into the tranquil countryside in the middle of a large forest. It's filled with many wonderful wildlife and other nature sounds. I intend to take full advantage of these soundscape opportunities. And that's why I bought these mics.

The ability to switch between omnidirectional and cardioid patterns will be beneficial. Omni when I'm completely surround by wonderful sounds, cardioid when there might be highway sounds behind me a few miles away that needs to be reduced/eliminated. I may eventually add some shotgun mics too, maybe do some surround sound soundscapes. But one step at a time.

Oh .. there is one curiosity about these mics. There's one spot on the mic where if I touch my finger there I'll hear a noticeable hum in the audio. It's not subtle either. It's clearly heard. If I ground myself to the mixer/recorder I'm using while touching this spot, the hum is very minimal. The spot is at the attenuator switch. I'm not sure what the problem is, and whether it can be corrected. In any case, I don't intend to be using these in my hands, so it's a none issue. I will troubleshoot this when time permits. It could be the mic, or the recorder, or the cable. I'll figure that out later. It's not really an issue at this point.

BTW, the stereo mic adapter is a great inclusion in this set. It fits well on my heavy duty Manfrotto camera tripod.

Also, I'll probably be using these mostly outside. I am hoping they'll hold up well on warm/hot humid Minnesota summer day. I won't be using them as much as professional music performers would. But I am more concerned about leaving them enclosed in the included case with all that (petroleum based?) foam padding. That stuff can degrade over the years and emit damaging gases. And the case can entrap moisture itself too. I've had electronics destroyed this way in similar cases over a span of twenty+ years. So, I'm not a huge fan of that case. I'll find a wood box and use some cotton clothes to pad it with during transport.

Usefull tools

By Sweetwater Customer

I've had these mics for a little over a year, and use them mainly for drum overheads and acoustic guitar. They handle both jobs amazingly. This pair were my first SDC mics, and I must say if you are just starting out you can't go wrong with these mics. FWIW I personally don't find myself using omni mode on these very often.

Clean and versatile

By Matthew from Pennsylvania

I've mostly used these mics in the omni position for recording acoustic piano. The sound is clean and has a very up-front, in-your-face feel to it in terms of the space it creates. The filters offer great flexibility and it's incredibly easy to switch between omni and cardioid patterns. I'm really happy with this purchase...very, very good value.

Great pair for overheads

By Sweetwater Customer from United States
Music Background: Semi-Professional Recording Engineer, Vocalist, Student, Musician, Composer

These mics are truly amazing. They deliver a gorgeous and clean sound on anything you put them. My primary use is on choral overheads and/or piano. For my choir I'm currently running these into a Zoom H6 and occasionally using a Focusrite ISA preamp with them. The sound is amazing. Great set of mics. You can't go wrong with them.

A sweet pair

By Tripod1966 from San Diego, CA
Music Background: Home recording artist

I was looking for a nice set of studio mics and bought these. I've had them in my home studio now for about 4 years and absolutely love them. I use them for my acoustic guitars, as well as mic'ing my guitar and bass amps during recording sessions. They are probably the best sounding and most versatile mics you can buy for under $1000. Try one directly in front of your amp/acoustic guitar and the other a few feet away for great results.
