It works

By Graham W. from MAPLEVILLE, RI

It does add significant gain, and I couldn't notice any distortion.
I ended up using it to prove to myself that I needed a stronger audio interface which I bought, but I have found several occasional uses for it since, and will be keeping it.

Triton

By Sweetwater Customer

These little Jems give you good clean head room, and no longer do you need to be on top of the mic!

What a difference!

By Keith from Minnesota
Music Background: Retired Pro engineer, lifelong musician, worship team

I was made a believer in inline preamps like Triton FETHead recently, especially for my field rig, which uses a low cost Focusrite Interface and sometimes long XLR cables. These are really nice for ribbon mics but I am now finding myself using these on critical dynamic mics too, and its greatly improved the recorded signal cascaded noise figure, improved SNR, on all my Shure and Audix dynamics. Highly recommended, easy to use and great bang for the buck. I'm retired product RF electronics & EM engineer and never worked for Triton, Cloud, etc... no agenda at all, just really glad to discover these little helpers. The only issue I had with the pre was the little "Triton" logo had not been properly glued and had fallen off the preamp and arrived disconnected from the preamp, however my account manager Aaron T at Sweetwater quickly made things right, and the replacement arrived in great condition.

Sounds better than a Cloudlifter at half the price and a tenth of the size.

By Nick from TACOMA, WA
Music Background: Musician, repair tech, community radio volunteer

What can I say? It gives cleaner boost with more volume than a Cloudlifter at about half the price. And unlike the Cloudlifter, it fits nicely on the microphone itself, so no need to clutter up your desk with another piece of gear and another XLR cable.

For real...why even consider the Cloudlifter when this is better and MUCH cheaper?

Triton FetHead is the easiest, fastest, lowest cost solution to microphone volume issues

By Daniel H. from Tulsa OK
Music Background: Playing guitar for decades, studio experience maybe 5 years

Talk about plug and play! My studio and all my gear constantly remind me how much knowledge and experience I need to make it all work. When my new desktop mic I use for podcasts and zoom calls needed a lift, instead of re-arranging all my existing interfaces and lifters I use for recording music, I bought this little device to see how easy and effective it could be. Within a few minutes after receiving it, I plugged the device right into my mic and cable, tested it on a live Teams call, and the group gave me the thumbs up. I will likely use it in some music recordings also since it seems to work perfectly.

Sounds Great on One Mixer, Unusable on Another

By Gordon K. from Oregon
Music Background: Pro multi-instrumentalist and composer, guitar instructor.

I was looking to boost the signal from my Shure SM7b mic for recording vocals, which is a very common application. But I got mostly noise and static going into my old, reliable Mackie SR24-4 mixer. (A similar inline pre I tried did the same thing.) The Fethead sounded great going into my newer, smaller, live mixer (also Mackie), but I don't use the 7b onstage.

I returned the Fethead.

Other preamps work fine with the 24-4, but the Fethead and similar inline pres apparently do not. I don't know why.

So, the bottom line is that the Fethead sounds great if it's compatible with your mixer.

Good Solution For Ribbon Mics

By Larry S. from Moulton AL
Music Background: Retired musician and recording studio owner

I tried the Triton Audio FetHead In-Line Mic Preamp as a solution for getting more gain out of my ribbon mics without damaging the ribbons or adding unwanted coloration to the sound. The FetHead provides plenty of gain yet remains transparent allowing my ribbons to retain their crisp, clear edge. Works great!

Better than expected results

By Sweetwater Customer

The FetHead in-line mic pre added gain and clarity! I can see utilizing it in various applications.

Perfect for my application

By James H. from Columbus, OH
Music Background: Door to door electric kazoo salesman

These do allow me to use ribbon mics without having to turn the preamp up to 10, and that is nice, but I bought the pair of these for a different reason. I bought them because I was worried that I would inadvertently dry my ribbons by hitting them with phantom power. And I would have, too. But now these stay on the ribbons - always. They're never off. These require phantom power to work but they do not pass it through to the mic. So they are a safeguard against me messing up. I don't worry about killing my mics anymore.

Side note, this manufacturer also sell an online boost that looks identical that does pass phantom power. So if you get these for using them the way I do, double check with your sales rep that you're getting the correct ones. Or just copy the part number associated with this review.

These offer me peace of mind and it's hard to put a price on that.

Does the job, clean gain, perfect for SM57 or other hungry mics

By Sweetwater Customer

Does the job. People leaving negative reviews because they cannot read or understand how the technology works is ridiculous. (Yes, you need phantom power for this to work. No, it does not work with condenser mics).

Smaller form factor than the Cloudlifter and more clean gain at half the price. Smaller then the SE Dynamite too.

FetHead did not measure up

By Sweetwater Customer

The FetHead requires fantom power - they don't tell you that in the brochure. They make it sound like it can just take the place of a pre-amp. IT CANNOT. I was wanting to go from my Shure 57 directly into my PC. The Shure 57 cannot do that without a preamp. The Triton FetHead, despite its claims, is of no help in this situation.

Built like a tank - plenty of crank

By matt m. from Pennsylvania
Music Background: professional musician singer/songwriter recording artist

The Triton Audio Fethead delivers as promised - the solution i was looking for to increase gain with dynamic mics on powered PA systems that have no pad volume control.

Exactly what I needed

By Sweetwater Customer

I record in my apartment most of the time, and being a noisy environment with thin walls, I stick to dynamic mics and quieter singing. Problem is, I can't crank my SM58 loud enough to sing as quietly as I'd need to to avoid a late-night noise complaint without introducing hiss. The FetHead lets me get Elliott Smith whisper-quiet while still coming through clean and clear. Absolute godsend.

FET Head - great with the SM7b

By Elksonic

I have three of the FetHead preamps and Use them on my SM7b and a pair of sE Electronics VR1 ribbon mics. One is permanently paired with the SM7. Great on the ribbon mics as overheads. They provide a boost and are quiet. Good to have around when you need that extra gain. They are small and easy to store.

Came apart and that ended it...

By Jim from Miami
Music Background: Semi Pro

I bought one of these in 2008 for $100 and I loved it, the sound was good, no extra artifacts. Then i dropped it on a wooden floor and it just unraveled ... i tried my best to reassemble it to no avail...get the Cloud Lifter or similar design because they are built to take the punishment where as these arnt built as well...Jim
