Brass Instruments

If there’s one section in a band or an orchestra that can really bring a performance to life, it’s the brass section. Fiery trumpets, blatty trombones, bombastic tubas — these elements can put the fire in your Earth, Wind & Fire and the spring in your Rite of Spring. Whether you’re shopping for top-quality brass instruments or accessories for your existing horn, you’ll find them here at Sweetwater.

What Are Brass Instruments?

Brass instruments are both aerophones and labrosones. Their distinct sound is derived from players blowing into a harmonically tuned resonator and articulating the sound with their lips (known as embouchure).

Pitch in brass instruments is produced by players manipulating the tubing length through the use of slides (trombone), valves (French horn and tuba), crooks (natural trumpet), or other mechanical means.

Though most professional brass instruments are crafted from precious metals — typically lacquered or plated brass — today’s brass instruments can be made from plastic and PVC to give marching and student brass instrumentalists an affordable entrée into the arts.

What Instruments Are in the Brass Family?

The most common instruments in the modern brass family are the trumpet, French horn (or simply, “horn”), trombone, and tuba. However, many more brass instruments are being welcomed into the fray of orchestral brass and concert brass instruments every day. These may include the bugle, cornet, flugelhorn, mellophone, and alto/tenor/baritone horn

Brass Instrument Accessories? Sweetwater’s Got ’Em!

Of course, great tone starts with a well-maintained instrument. You can keep your horn looking new and sounding its best by stocking up on valve oil, slide lubricant, and cleaning cloths.

If you’re looking to shape the tone of your brass instrument, then an upgraded mouthpiece is a great place to start. Sweetwater carries aftermarket trumpet, trombone, and tuba mouthpieces in various depths, cup sizes, and compositions to give you the sound and heat you’re searching for.

Need to travel lighter? Today’s molded horn cases are formfitting and often have cutouts for sheet music, oils, mutes, and more.
