When it comes to Latin-based rumba rhythms and tumbao grooves, the conga is king. These barrel-shaped tubular hand drums have an earthy depth and vocal-like snap that can drive a horn and rhythm section like none other, with or without the aid of a drum set.

But as percussionists at Sweetwater can tell you, a conga is only as good as the stand it’s mounted to. Poor conga stand mounting systems swill rob your congas of their natural tone and resonance and can severely affect your playing health as those sessions roll on.

So, whether you’re thinking of upgrading your existing conga stand or you’re just diving in to the world of congas for the very first time, Sweetwater is your guide to all things stands and mounts.

Conga Stands

True, any type of conga stand will offer a significant improvement over playing a conga directly on the floor, both in terms of tone and ergonomics. But each style of conga stand and conga mount is going to come with its own strengths and weaknesses. With that in mind, here are the three major players in the conga drum stand market today.

Tripod Conga Stands

Far and away the most popular type of conga stand is the tripod. As its name implies, tripod conga stands suspend your conga’s on a base mounted to a trio of collapsible legs on rubberized feet. Tripod stands are available in single-conga or dual-conga configurations. So, if you’ve got a standard 10"/11" setup and want to keep things simple, a side-by-side dual conga stand is a smart investment. And whether you’re playing a single conga or a trio/quintet, a single-conga tripod stand makes a sensible way to save space and expand your setup.

Basket Conga Stands

A low-profile alternative to the tripod stand that has been gaining traction the past several decades is the basket-style conga stand. Unlike tripod conga stands, which suspend congas from a height greater than the congas themselves, the basket conga stand supports congas (usually just a single quinto, conga, or tumba) from beneath in a squat basket mount without extending a pole into the air. This has the benefit of improving sightlines and reducing clutter onstage. It also allows the player to forego mounting hardware on their high-end congas, which can, in some cases, lead to better tone and resonance as well as a cleaner look overall.

Other Conga Stand Options

Despite the advantages of conga stands, some percussionists are just more comfortable playing congas from a seated position. If this describes you, we highly recommend pairing your conga with the LP633 Conga Sound Platform from Latin Percussion. This beautiful all-wood disk with rubber suspension strips slips right under your conga on the floor to improve tone and projection. And whether you’re in a studio or stage setting, the improved tone, enhanced stability, and reduced footprint you’ll achieve will help you to perform your best.
