About Baritone Guitars

Baritone guitars are famous for their deep tones and extended bass registers. From the quacky, cavernous textures of The Cure’s Robert Smith* to the down-tuned carnage of Deftones’ Stephen Carpenter, baritone guitars are a smart option for songwriters of any genre who want to expand their voicings without learning a new instrument. You see, baritone guitars are tuned exactly like a standard guitar (E2–E4), just down a perfect fourth (B1–B3). Combined with an extended scale length and heavier-gauge strings, this gives the baritone guitar a fresh tone and feel while remaining familiar to guitar players new and old.

*Editor’s note: Robert Smith actually played an octave-down Fender Bass VI to achieve his bari-like guitar textures. But the effect is identical.

Baritone Guitars FAQs

Where Did the Baritone Guitar Originate?

Danelectro is often credited for mass-producing the first baritone guitar models. Their use in mainstream surf and country music led other guitar manufacturers to follow suit with their own baritone guitars.

Which Artists Play Baritone Guitars?

A short list of players famous for their baritone guitars (or bari-like textures) includes: Korn’s Brian “Head” Welch, Toska’s Rabea Massaad, the B-52s’ Ricky Wilson, The Presidents of the United States of America’s Dave Dederer, acoustic superstars Andy McKee and Dave Matthews, At the Gates’ Martin Larsson and Jonas Stålhammar, Staind’s Mike Mushok, and Minor Threat/Fugazi front man Ian MacKaye — just to name a few!

How Are Baritone Guitars Tuned?

Baritone guitars are commonly tuned a perfect fourth lower than standard guitars: B1–E2–A2–D3–F♯3–B3 (from low to high). As with standard guitars, however, there are no hard rules when it comes to tuning. Down a fifth, Open B, Drop A — the tuning world is your oyster when it comes to baritone guitars.

What Gives Baritone Guitars Their Signature Drop-tuned Sound?

An extended scale length (commonly 25.6 inches) and heavier-gauge strings (usually .013s or .014s) allow baritone guitars to handle deeper tuning without introducing string slack.
