Check the Polarity in Your System!

The Cricket Polarity Test Set checks polarity and continuity of speakers, speaker cable, microphones (wired & wireless), amplifiers, mixers, etc. Whether you're a serious live sound engineer or a weekend coffeehouse performer, the Cricket is for you!

The Cricket is great for anybody working with sound, whether it be a contractor, recording studio, live performer, sound engineer, etc. Reversed polarity is a common problem and is easy to detect when you use the Cricket.

In even the simplest sound systems, there are all sorts of ways for polarity to become reversed; the more complex the system, the greater the potential for problems. The Cricket can test the polarity of wireless microphones, mixers, effects devices, amps, cables, and speakers.

Polarity reversal can wreak havoc with a sound system. If the polarity of identical or near-identical signals is incorrect (like one of two mics on a guitar cabinet or two mics on any single source), then when the two are combined they will either completely cancel out or cause cancellations on certain frequencies, resulting in diminished sound quality. Polarity is absolute, either correct or reversed. Galaxy Audio's battery-powered Cricket Polarity/Continuity Test Set makes it easy to determine whether the polarity of every component in an audio system from patchbay to console to speakers is correct. The Cricket tests balanced and unbalanced cables of up to 2,000 feet in length. It will drive a "snake" (even one with transformers) and indicate which pin of a microphone's XLR connector (Pin 2 or 3) is hot. The Cricket can also plug directly into a powered speaker cabinet and drive the components. A glance at the Cricket's red and green LED's can save hours of troubleshooting. No wonder it's an indispensable tool for sound system owners, operators, installers, and sound rental companies.

Works quite well

I got this as a solution to some possible problems. It worked very well to verify the polarity on my all my recording hardware such as monitor amps, outboard gear etc., speakers, microphone cables, and microphones. It worked just as it was described. There are a number of comments about the quirky battery covers on the units. Maybe some are worse than others but mine were no problem at all. Knowing that up front, I was careful with them but had no problems.

Every studio needs this!!

Observing correct polarity is absolutely critical, whether for studio or stage. This is a MUST HAVE tool for any studio or live venue. Get one and use it — all the time. I've had mine for 20 years and I use it all the time. For engineers that travel from studio to studio it's a critical tool because you never know what you'll encounter. This tool enables technical troubleshooting before you encounter a problem.

Well Made

Have owned the older version for years but it grew legs and walked away. I lent it to a Friend to check his touring system. He went on tour and came back but my Cricket is still on tour. So bought a new one. Works like the older one and is slightly restyled. Also now has a send and receive chart on the back section for quick connection review.

The only thing I would like to see added is a an "RCA Unbalanced " output jack on the unit. Had to ring out a High End Home Sound System. I had to use one of my adapters (XLR To RCA) to feed the Pre Amp input on the home unit.

Otherwise Great Product from Galaxy Audio. And thanks to Nick In Sales at Sweetwater for following thru on the sale and shipment.

Works Great

The Galaxy Audio Cricket Polarity Tester does exactly what I wanted it to do. I have a recording studio and I wanted to be sure that the polarity from the microphone to the speaker and all points in between along the signal chain was correct. You really don't want to have a cable or a piece of gear that is wired incorrectly and flipping the polarity on your audio signal and causing issues in the way things sound. I have also used this in a live PA system as well and it worked flawlessly.

The only flaw is in the way the battery covers are designed. The battery covers work fine but I really think they could have been designed better and is the only reason I gave a 4.5 rating. You will need a Phillips head screwdriver to insert/replace the batteries.

I would highly recommend the Galaxy Audio Cricket Polarity Tester for anyone with a home or pro recording studio or anyone trying to troubleshoot PA polarity issues.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Austin Moss

If you've ever had to pull cable through a wall or drag a snake from a stage to FOH, then you know what a drag it is to troubleshoot a bad channel. It can be especially tough to check polarity and continuity when the two ends are separated by a wall! The solution is having a Galaxy Audio Cricket Polarity Test Set. It's also a lot quicker and easier to use than a multimeter on all your patch and mic cables. The Cricket is a mandatory accessory for any studio tech or live sound engineer.
