About Yamaha Acoustic Guitars
For six decades, Yamaha has been a pioneering force in acoustic guitars. An unwavering commitment to value and craftsmanship has earned Yamaha acoustics a sterling reputation across all their price classes — from the entry-level FS800 concert acoustic (a first guitar to many of us at Sweetwater!) to the competition-grade GC42C nylon-string classical.
Are you interested in adding a Yamaha acoustic guitar to your studio arsenal or live setup? At Sweetwater, you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for. Read on to learn more about the various sizes, series, and models available today.
A Brief History of Yamaha Acoustic Guitars
It all started in 1966. Guitar developer Hideo Ueda of Nippon Gakki Co., Ltd. (known as the Yamaha Corporation today), introduced the world to Yamaha’s first folk acoustic, the FG-180 dreadnought. Renowned for its rich tone and powerful sound projection, the FG-180 quickly led to the release of the legendary FG/FS Red Label lineup — a series of guitars that continues to be celebrated by beginners and professionals the world over.
Then, in 1974, Yamaha upped the ante with its exotic L Series (“L” for “luxury”). Models such as the L-15 and L-31 were marked by their “piano-like” clarity and exquisite attention to detail.
That same year, Yamaha — with the help of famed Spanish luthier Manuel Hernandez — established itself as a major player in the custom classical guitars market with the release of the GC-30A and GC-30B.
Within eight short years, Yamaha had become a household name in acoustic guitars, from entry-level strummers to high-end masterpieces to authentic folk instruments rivaling the work of the old masters. Yamaha’s legacy of acoustic innovation extends to today with its premium FG9 R dreadnought and nylon-string Silent Guitar.
Finding the Right Yamaha Acoustic Guitar for You
Sweetwater is proud to carry hundreds of Yamaha acoustic guitars to complement each of today’s players, producers, and pickers. Not sure where to begin on your shopping journey? Use the following guidelines to narrow down your search.
Choose a category
The quickest way to zero in on your next Yamaha acoustic guitar is by using the category filters on this page. Options like 6-string acoustic guitars and classical and nylon-string guitars contain multiple parameters to quickly connect you to the acoustic that best serves your needs. Don’t see a specific category that checks all your boxes? Use the guidelines below.
Righty or lefty?
Another way to filter out guitars that aren’t relevant to your needs is to target right- or left-handed Yamaha acoustics in our on-site shop filters. This can significantly improve your signal-to-noise ratio, especially if you’re a southpaw.
Body style
The shape and size of each Yamaha acoustic guitar contribute to its sound, comfort, and portability. Take the Yamaha dreadnought and jumbo. These guitars are known to possess the power and fullness to accompany a vocalist fully unplugged. Yet, for some performers, the sheer size and level of these acoustics can feel overpowering and more challenging to play. That’s where body styles like the smaller concert, thinline, and parlor come into play. These acoustics have cozier shapes to curl up to and boast a smooth and balanced sound that can better suit softer vocalists. Light traveler? Consider a 3/4- or 1/2-size Yamaha acoustic.
String type and number
Steel-string acoustics have a bristly feel and lively quality, perfect for strumming, plucking, and tapping. Nylon-string acoustics, on the other hand, are preferred by classical guitarists and flamenco players for their smooth feel and heritage tone. 6-string Yamahas may be the standard for most forms of music, but nothing beats the mellow-gold vibes of a 12-string acoustic for folk.
Series
Each Yamaha acoustic guitar series communicates a specific performance level or feature set. Examples include the classroom classical School Series, elite thinline nylon NX Series, and past-meets-present L Series with ARE torrefaction.
Onboard electronics
Yamaha acoustic guitars may be fully acoustic with no installed electronics or acoustic-electric with built-in pickups that can be connected directly to a PA system or recording device. Then, there are the TransAcoustic models, which deliver plain-air onboard effects directly through the soundhole. Picking a guitar with the right gear can have a dramatic impact on your performance life, so choose accordingly!
