Inspired Re-creation of a Legendary Small-diaphragm Condenser

Their acclaimed compressors and preamps have famously upset the pro audio price/performance ratio. When Warm Audio turned its attention to the granddaddy of small-diaphragm FET condenser microphones, you know it had to be good. And it is. Flash back to any top recording studio in the 1970s. You'll see the venerable '84 everywhere. Sweetwater engineers who have worked with different generations of this perennial studio favorite know that the vintage ones have a warmer, more forgiving sonic character. It's these circuit designs — dating back nearly half a century — that Warm Audio closely followed for the WA-84. Stellar performance, top-shelf parts, and amazing value: that's the Warm formula — and the WA-84 nails it.

Quality components make the Warm difference

Warm Audio doesn't cut corners on components, but they do order parts and build in quantity, which keeps costs down and delivers amazing value. Featuring a meticulously crafted vintage reproduction capsule, WA-84 is built with premium all-discrete components that include Fairchild transistors, Wima capacitors, and a CineMag USA transformer. Designed for professional commercial and home studios, live sound reinforcement, and broadcast applications, the WA-84 has the uncanny ability to finesse a wide range of sources, such as acoustic guitars, double bass, drums and percussion, piano, strings, brass and woodwinds, and more.

What can the WA-84 do for you?

Every studio needs at least one pair of high-quality small-diaphragm condenser mics, and the Warm Audio WA-84 is designed after a legendary one. With its versatile cardioid polar pattern and 10dB pad, you can use the WA-84 on any instrument — with world-class results. It makes snares and tom toms sound huge. It's great for drum overheads, capturing cymbals with warmth and vibrancy. It's perfect for adding a bit of room to complement a close dynamic or ribbon mic on a guitar cabinet. Engage the pad, and move the mic right up on the speaker grille.

Double your value with this stereo pair

The WA-84 is an ideal choice for piano, vibraphone, marimba, congas, strings, woodwinds, and so much more. The list goes on, but suffice to say: You haven't lived until you've heard a grand piano spring to life when miked with a pair of WA-84s. For drum room mics, use two of them and nuke the stereo signal with a fast limiter. Positively explosive! Considering its amazing price, you're wise to consider a pair of these excellent mics for recording tracks in stereo. You'll not only doubling your value — you're getting a valuable addition to your mic locker you'll reach session after session!

The Perfect Drum Overheads

I've found them… the triple B… Big, Bright and Beautiful! I've searched high and low for a good pair of drum overhead mics that don't cost a small fortune. The Warm Audio WA-84 Stereo Pair are truly a dream come true.

LOW END: As soon as I set them up and hit record, I was BLOWN AWAY by the low end response. My toms sound like battle drums on a viking war ship! I've had Nashville producers ask me what I'm using and they're shocked when I tell them.

CLARITY: The high end is creamy. No seriously, it's like butter that's been slowly melted over a hot cinnamon roll. I don't know how they did it, but even my A Custom crash sounds brilliant without being harsh.

MID RANGE: Even in my 2kHz heavy room, the mid range clarity is to die for. Natural. There's no other word for it. My drums sound they way they're supposed to sound. 'Nough said.

FEATURES: The -10bd Pad and included shock-mounts are all these things need. They're compact which makes them versatile and easy to setup.

Awesome SDC

I'm a big fan of Warm Audio microphones and this WA-84 stereo pair does not disappoint. I've used them in stereo guitar recordings and the realism this pair of microphones delivers is fantastic. The sound is full and rich but never exaggerated. There's no high frequency boost at 10k like so many inexpensive SDC on the market.

I regularly use a pair of WA-47jr for stereo recording and they also sound fantastic but their size and weight can be a hurdle to deal with. The WA-84 achieves the same big smooth sound but in a much more compact and light-weight size so they are much easier to physically place relative to the source.

I've been using a single WA-47 tube microphone to record my Martin D-35. I like the focus and huge sound with this single microphone. The WA-84 pair of microphones also delivers a big sound for situations where I want to record the Martin in stereo. I place one WA-84 about a foot out from the 12th fret and the other one about a foot away pointed at the high string side of the bridge. This combination delivers a giant stereo dreadnaught sound without being too bass-heavy. In the drum booth the WA-84 are amazing performers, they deliver cymbal sounds that are realistic and clear, never peaky or thin, exactly what you'd expect from flat response microphones.

I've used a vintage pair of Neumann KM-84 many times but their prices have grown to obscene dollar values. I've also used the modern KM-184 which are transformer-less technology, I disliked these due to boosted high frequency response.

There are a lot of cheaper SDC to choose from, I have not tried them all but I have tried enough of them. The WA-84 hits the sweet spot in tone and overall performance for an excellent and fair price. I was skeptical when Warm Audio entered the microphone market with the WA-87 but now I'm a believer, I own eight WA microphones and use them all regularly.

Don't buy the WA-84 just because of their low price, choose them because they sound great!

Good music to you!!
